08 Feb 2007 Carbon dioxide plot to tackle climate change
The negative environmental impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) could be mitigated by storing the gas deep under the earth, according to experts.
A new theory, suggested by scientists from the University of Leicester and the British Geological Society, found a number of western European locations which would be suitable for long-term storage.
The proposals, which were published in the Planet Earth journal, also outlined the way in which CO2 would be stored as a liquid or gas beneath hydrate cement sediments, after being collected at industrial sites and transferred via pipeline or ship.
A precedent for the technique currently exists - albeit commercially - as large volumes of CO2 are stored by Statoil of Norway in order to circumnavigate the payment of carbon taxes.
Yesterday, the EC proposed the most stringent cap on car CO2 emissions for new vehicles in the world - at 130 grammes per kilometre.
